Auckland for King's Birthday Weekend from Wendy's Quilts and More

I'm still getting used to saying "King's Birthday Weekend".  For all of my life it's been Queen's Birthday Weekend, but now we need to get used to calling it King's Birthday Weekend - and there may never be another Queen on the throne in my lifetime with William and George next in line.

Anyway, I had a lovely King's Birthday Weekend because I went to Auckland with my family to see my mum and dad.  Mum is doing a lot of clearing out and I bought quite a few treasures home with me.

My Nana ...

MEDALLION MANIA from Q-BITS

I'm ready for something I haven't done for a couple of years that is always a challenge  -- a medallion quilt.  I like the "design as you go" format with no preconceived pattern.  Additionally being a frugal soul, I wanted a project to use my scraps.  I did purchase two fat quarters on sale for $2.00 each, and used pieces of leftover batting and a piece of fabric for the back that I had purchased as a souvenir in Maine in 1992.   It feels good to be thrifty, using what I have, and stretching my creativity!

Perfecting the Pillsbury Dough Boy Look - part 2 from Quilting Studio Adventures

Longtime readers know that I’ve made quilted jackets only to later cut them up and make them into zippered pouches and totes.  When will I learn my lesson?  Apparently not anytime soon…

So I decided to make a bag that would actually stand on its own.   But as I made the ...

47 Purses in the Mail - and My Reward from Quilting Studio Adventures

Combined with a few purses done in August, I sent 47 purses to Sew Powerful this week.  It is a great feeling of accomplishment and with such a great payoff.  There was a team from Sew Powerful in Zambia last week, and they posted pictures of young ladies receiving their purses.  Go to SewPowerful.org for these pictures. Along with those smiles were good reports from the various components of Sew Powerful - sewing, farming, soap making, etc.  This community-driven initiative supported by the Sew Powerful army makes me know that what I do, along with hundreds of other purse makers ...

A Finished UFO: A Deconstruction from Quilting Studio Adventures

In trying to make room in my cabinets for piles on the floor, I found this sort of completed quilt. It's from my Jinny Beyer/batik period, probably 2012-ish. Jinny Beyer is a genius with texture, color, and light; I have learned much from her. But then I get cheap about buying kits for patterns. So this quilt is her pattern but from my stash. And I love it. But as I was quilting it, frustration set in. Let me sing this quilt's praises but also point out its issues and what I intend to do.
I practiced ...
